Terrorism destroying northern region – Shehu of Borno

The Shehu of Borno, HRH Abubakar Ibn Umar El-Kanemi has blamed the sustained state of violence and general state of insecurity in the northern part of the country since 1999, especially the rise of Boko Haram terrorist group on activities of unchecked youth militancy.

El-Kanemi stated this yesterday in Abuja at the first National Conference on: “Community Conflicts and Youth Militancy in Northern Nigeria and the Challenges of Democratic Practice in Nigeria, organized by the Al-Mustapha Peace Unity and Development Initiative (APUDI).

According to him, an idle and unemployed militant youths can always serve as a feedstock for the Boko Haram insurgents thus taking them away from more productive sectors like agriculture, industry, small scale enterprises, and services industry amongst others.

For the people of Borno, he said, the epi-centre of the Boko Haram insurgency, this conference cou[d not have come at a better time than now for many reasons.

“This is because uncontrolled or unchecked youth militancy, which is the theme of this conference, is a major factor on which the Boko Haram insurgency feeds and grows”, he remarked.

He noted that his conference on Community Conflict and Youth Militancy in Nigeria is timely and very important because this matter is really destroying Northern Nigeria and its future and therefore all concerned must quickly address it squarely and holistically.

“Particularly, for Borno State, the epi-centre of the insurgency where most of the killings and destructions have taken place and still going on, I urge this Conference to come up with a comprehensive and implementable recommendation for the rehabilitation and re-integration of our youths to the mainstream of our society and the national economy”.
